Last summer I was asked to officiate at my honorary godson’s wedding. It was a joy performing the ceremony.
Today, about a week later, I put on the same suit, and a reach into my coat pocket only to retrieve the words that the young bride spoke to her husband to be. They spoke to me as a poem. My heart gradually unfolded, more and more as she said every word.
I share them now, because the world should know a declaration of love, such as these words convey.
This is one of the joys of being alive. Here are Kendra’s words:
I knew you were special from the first time we met. Your smile instantaneously knocked down all of my walls and as I got to know you and as we fell in love your loving, warm personality drew me in deeper and deeper. Each layer uncovered another even more beautiful layer until I realized that you are good to your very core. A man of convictions, passion, empathy, and generosity. A man who has made me feel so loved and cared for that I have shed all fears for the future because I have the strength in knowing you will be by my side, and no matter what happens we will be there for each other.
You inspire me to be a better person and encourage me to pursue my dreams. I know I can always count on you to cheer me on in my triumphs and cheer me up in my failures. I am lucky that I get to be the one who shares my life with you. I am lucky I found somebody who understands me the way you do. I love our life together and I am excited to see what the future holds for us.
As your wife, I promise to try to make you laugh every single day.
I vow to try to take your happiness into account equally to my own.
I vow to help you stop and smell the roses.
I vow to not take you for granted even when there are road bumps.
I vow to be your cheerleader and crying shoulder.
I vow to not hold grudges over the petty.
I vow to be a good mother to our future children.
I promise I will continue to nurture what we have together because it is beautiful. You are beautiful. I love you.
p.s. from Calvin: After Brandon got done with his words, which I don’t have, because he did not put them into my pocket after he completed them, I could only say, “wow!” There was nothing more that I could add. When you silence a lawyer, a miracle has truly occurred.
